Asian games or Asiad is multi-sport event that takes place every four years and as its name indicates only athletes from Asia are allowed to participate. The most recent Asian games were conducted from September 19th to October 4th, 2014 at Incheon, South Korea . It was the 17th Asian games to ever take place.

The right to host the Asiad was won by Incheon,South Korea by outbidding Delhi, India 36 -13 . Main reason for giving preference to Incheon was told to be the lack of enthusiasm that Delhi had for hosting the games.

Asiad 2014 official slogan was “Diversity Shines Here” referring and highlighting about the various religions, cultures etc. that are present in the Asian continent. An official mascot was appointed to Asiad 2014 which was three spotted seals named Chumuro, Vichuon and Barame in blue, green and pink colours respectively. The games were allotted 48 training facilities and 49 venues for competition most of which were spread across inches and a few were featured in cities in Gyeonggi Province, Chungju and Seoul. The games cost the Korean and Incheon government about 1.62 billion US dollars.

Incheon hosted 9,501 athletes from 45 nations and the games consisted of 439 events for 36 sports. Asiad 2014 added new 8 sports like ten-pin bowling, cricket, kabaddi, karate, squash etc. that are not included in the Olympics and events such as judo team, compound archery, mixed relay triathlon were introduced for the first time.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony was held on 19th September 2014, and it was quite a aweing view to witness. Actors like Jang Dong-gun, Kim Soo-hyun etc. and the popular stars of music industry like Psy, Sumi Jo, JYJ, Exo, etc. also performed making the ceremony a very entertaining one.

China Ranked Top

For the 9th time in a row China ranked top in the medal rally with total of 344 medals that included 151 gold ones followed by South Korea at second with total of 228 medals that included 79 gold ones and Japan at third with total of 201 medals that include 47 gold medals, during these games 27 Asian and 14 World record were broke creating history.India earned 8th position with 11 Gold medals. The honour of Most Valuable player (MVP) of the games was bestowed on KosukeHagino, a Japanese swimmer.

Closing Ceremony

On 4th October 2014 at 07:00 pm the closing ceremony was held with the theme “Our Cherished Memories of Incheon”. The closing ceremony was as fabulous as the opening ceremony and featured K-Pop stars like Big Bang, Sistar etc.

These games were filled with controversies like the shortage of transportation for journalists, low public interest and issues regarding the gala show and opening ceremony. The host country tried its best to increase the public interest in the Asiad 2014 by offering transport charges for participants, shuttles buses for late night shifts etc. But at the end of the games Asiad 2014 was declared a general success despite having a low budget.
