Overview of the Assistant Commandants

Assistant Commandants are the deputy superintendent of Police (DSP) Rank and Group-A Gazetted Officers in the Central Armed Police Forces of India.
Of these Assistant Commandants, nearly half of them are appointed directly through UPSC selection Examination System, which is known as Assistant Commandant Examinations and are known by the name ‘Directly Appointed Gazetted Officers (DAGO)’. These officers can reach up to the ranks of IG and ADG in their own organizations without having conferred to the Indian Police Service.

Educational Eligibility of the Assistant Commandant Examinations

Regarding the Educational Qualifications of the Candidates, the candidates must be holding a Bachelor’s degree of a University approved by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions as established by an Act of Parliament or being declared to be deemed as a University under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 or posses an equivalent qualification as such.

The Candidates appearing in the degree exam are allowed to appear this Assistant Commandant Examinations, but they are required to submit proof of passing along with the detailed application forms. These are required to be submitted after the qualification the written test, medical standards test and physically test.

Physical Eligibility of the Assistant Commandant Examinations

The Candidates must meet the prescribed Physical and Medical Standards for admission to Central Police Forces Examination or the Assistant Commandants Examination. Thus, the details regarding this should be paid with high priority. The details of the Physical Standard can be found in the notifications of Scheme of Examination section.

Selection Procedure of the Candidates

The Selection Procedure of the Candidates can be done in the following way. The Whole Selection procedure comprises of a Written Exam, Physical and Medical Standard Test, Physical Efficiency Test and later on a Personality Test of those candidates.

A very important note about the whole selection procedure is that once a candidate is being selected on the basis of an earlier examination to the post of Assistant Commandants in any of the forces participating in the Central Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) Examination, the same candidate is not eligible to appear at a following examination for recruitment of Assistant Commandants in the participating CPFs.

Syllabus of the Assistant Commandant Examinations

The Syllabus of the Assistant Commandant Examinations Written examination includes the subjects like General Ability and Intelligence and Essay, Precis Writing and Comprehension. The Subject ‘General Ability and Intelligence and Essay’ is of 2 hours duration and carries the maximum of 250 marks. While the subject ‘Essay, Precis Writing and Comprehension’ carries 150 marks having the same 2 hours duration in the examination.

The Paper 1 covers the questions based on logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude, Data Interpretation and numerical Ability. The Questions based on general awareness, Biotechnology, scientific temper, comprehension and appreciation of scientific phenomena of everyday observation, Information Technology, and Environmental Science are also being covered in the examination. Some questions based on Indian Polity and Economy, History of India, Indian and World Geography, are also being covered in the ‘General Ability and Intelligence’ Part of the examination.

The Paper 2 in the form of ‘Essay, Precis Writing and Comprehension’ covers the questions on the given essay topic, arranging them in orderly, concise, understandable and lucid manner in effective and grammatically correct language completely free from spelling errors.

Application fees of the Examinations

The Candidates excluding Female, SC/ST candidates, are required to pay a fee of Rs. 200. This fee should either be deposited in the form of the money in any SBI Branch by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI, State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Travancore or by using any Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.

The Recruitment of the Assistant Commandants in being done in the following fields or services:

• Indo-Tibetan Border Police
• Sashastra Seema Bal
