Geology as an Optional for Civil Services Exam

Geology has risen as one of the most secure optional subject for the Civil Services Mains examinations. Topography is one of the scoring subjects as compared to others. It isgeology optional straightforward subject and simple to split into various sections. However, being an experimental subject there are less risks of the subject falling in the general classification. You might certainly require more than three months covering the syllabus, since it is a bit extensive.

How to Study ?

The best methodology would be to pick a subject from the syllabus and read it from any standard book and make your notes for every point and re read them more number of times. Among the books, Mukherjee is a decent book for some points. So is the book by Aussif Sayeed, which is really great from the Civil Services perspective. The graduation notes of Geology understudies, arranged by IGNOU are also very good.

Portion

Also, you can likewise plan for The Geologist Exam which is completed by the UPSC for selecting proficient applicants to different posts. A portion of the posts are Hydro geologist, Geologist, collaborator Geologist and Assistant Hydro geologist in India.

The Geology paper I covers the entire syllabus of geo-morphology, paleontology, geotectonics etc.

The Geology Paper II will generally get questions from subjects like Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Mineralogy, Geochemistry. Understudies will likewise be tried in their insight in Environmental Geology and Geochemistry.

The Geology paper tends to focus more on Ore genesis, Mineral revelation, Indian mineral silt and so on.
There are always a couple of questions from mineral trading and lending, designing topography, Geology of energizes. Hydrogeology portion covers wells through pressure and outline, sources etc.

High value topics which are always asked include Groundwater science, incident and designation of water, underground water examination, issues and administration.

If you are planning to take geology as an optional subject, take care to prepare all topics, no topic should be left out as unlike other subjects, every topic is important here. Geology requires at least an year of study for complete preparation.

Geology is good subject for scoring. ‘Interest ,Sound knowledge and Presentation skill’ together plays important role in Good Scoring. If you have interest then you must go on.Don’t bother about toughness of any subject.Hard-work and smart work are essential for success in ‘every’ subject.
Cracking exam in 18 months by self study depends upon your mental and physical strength. You must have idea of your strength.Plan well according it and follow plan.Success is yours.

Good Question……Generally students prefer those subjects whose ‘fair basic knowledge’ they have ex.history, geography, politics etc. As well as they also prefer theirs SPECIAL subject of graduation. So comparatively Geology interested or geology graduate students are much less than other.
While thinking about success ratio……..its not always constant for any subject. There can be other subjects which have low success ratio than geology.

  4. Sir, I am from civil engineering background and i know only part of engineering geology.
