Overview of the SCRA or the Special Class Railway Apprentices Exam

SCRA or the Special Class Railway Apprentices Exams are the Procedure of the Examination system conducted by the UPSC. This is the Examination system for the part of the candidates, who undergo a very tough examination system conducted by the UPSC. This is the Examination system, being conducted for the entry into the undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Jamalpur. This is one of the oldest selection criteria, being held in the country.

Notifications of the Special Class Railway Apprentices Exams

The notifications of these examinations come in the month of February, while the examination is being conducted in the month of the July. However, According to the new rules issued by the Ministry of Railways, the exam is now conducted once two times in a year. Just recently, a notification for the applications of this Special Class Railway Apprentices concluded in which the eligible candidates could have applied online from 11-10-2014 to 07-11-2014. The exact number of seats in this notification was 42.

Educational Eligibility Criteria of the candidates

To be eligible to appear in the examination, the candidates should be either holding one of the following:

1st or 2nd Division in the Intermediate or an equivalent Examination of a University or Board approved by the Government of India with having Mathematics as the compulsory Subject and including at least one of either Physics and Chemistry in the examination.

Even the Candidates holding Graduation Degree with Mathematics and at least one of the subjects Physics and Chemistry as their degree subjects are also eligible to appear in the examination.

1st or 2nd Division in the Higher Secondary Examination under 10+ 2 pattern of School Education having Mathematics as the main subject and including at least one of the subjects in the form of Physics and Chemistry in the examination.

The candidates must have passed the 1st year examination under the five years Engineering Degree Course of a University, given that before joining the Degree Course, he should have passed the Higher Secondary Examination or pre-University or equivalent examination in the 1st or 2nd Division.

Syllabus of the Special Class Railway Apprentices Exams

The syllabus of the Special Class Railway Apprentices Exams is spread to six different fields. These six fields feature English, General Knowledge, Psychological Test, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The Papers English, General Knowledge and Psychological Test constitute the Paper 1 while the Paper 2 comprises of Physics and Chemistry. The Paper 3 covers Mathematics as the sole Subject. The allotted time for each Paper is 2 hours and the maximum marks comprises of 200 each, thus totaling to 600 marks during the examination.

After the qualification in the written examinations, the successful candidates are required to appear in the Personality Test, which carry the maximum of 200 marks.

The selection Procedure of the Candidates

The selected candidates from the Special Class Railway Apprentices Exams undergo a 4 year rigorous training programme in Mechanical Engineering. The Institute which carries out the Training Programme is BIT, Mesra, Ranchi. During the Training Programme, the semester system of BIT, Mesra is followed along with the workshop training sessions during the holidays at BIT, Mesra. The Approximate vacancies hovers around 40 to 50 each year.

Pay Structures in the Special Class Railway Apprentices

The Candidates who are selected through this examination are taken as the apprentices get a stipend of Rs. 9100 and Dearness Allowance besides other benefits in the form of medical care, privilege passes, PTOs and many more. On the whole, we can say that they are adopted by the Indian Railways with all high class facilities at Gymkhana Jamalpur. The good thing is that their stipend also increases by each year. At the same time, they are guaranteed top class Group A service, which they get after successful completion of four years of training.

Those Successful candidates join as Indian Railway Services of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) Officers in Indian Railways and been given a chance to live a challenging along with the satisfying job ahead.
