Section Officers or stenographers (Grade B/Grade 1) Departmental Competitive Examination

The Examination in the form of Section Officers or stenographers (Grade B/Grade 1) Departmental Competitive Examination is the responsibility of the UPSC. Union Public Service Commission holds a Combined Limited Departmental Competitive Examination for additions in the Select Lists for the Section Officers’ Grade of Railway Board Secretariat Service, Section Officers’ Grade and Stenographers’ Grade-I/Grade ‘B’ of the services like Section Officers’ Grade of Central Secretariat Service, Section Officers’ Grade (Integrated Grade II & III) of General Cadre of Indian Foreign Service, Branch ‘B’, Grade ‘A’ & ‘B’ merged of Central Secretariat Stenographers’ Service, Grade ‘A’ & ‘B’ merged of Armed Forces Headquarters Stenographers’ Service, Grade-I of the Stenographers’ Cadre of Indian Foreign Service, Branch ‘B’, Grade ‘B’ of the Railway Board Secretariat Stenographers’ Service, Section Officers’ Grade of Armed Forces Head Quarters Civil Service and Section Officers’ Grade of the Intelligence Bureau

Notifications of the Examinations

The Notifications of this examination comes in the month of July, while the exam is being conducted in the month of the December.
Educational Qualifications to appear in the Examination

Syllabus of the Examination

There are two parts of the syllabus of the examination. In Part A, the candidates are required to appear in the Essay Type papers. These essay Type Papers are as follows:

1) Noting and drafting, precis writing

2) This covers several areas, depending on the category of the posts, which the candidates are appearing.

• Procedure and Practice in Government of India Secretariat and Attached offices
• Office Procedure and Practice

The Syllabus of these papers is divided on the basis of the category of the candidates. Thus, having the common name of the paper but quite different question based on the Candidature of the posts, which they are appearing.

3) General Knowledge of the constitution of India and the Machinery of Government, Practice and Procedure in Parliament
The same goes here too. Based on the Posts, the questions are being asked in this portion of the syllabus.

4) General Financial and Service Rules
The same goes here too. Based on the Posts, the questions are being asked in this portion of the syllabus.

5) General Studies
In the Part B, the candidates are having the Assessment of 5 years CRs. This stage carries the total of 100 marks.

Application fees of the Section Officers or stenographers (Grade B/Grade 1) Departmental Competitive Examination

The Information Bulletin and Application Form costs Rs.50. This whole set of the information bulletin and application form can be bought from the general post office of the city by giving Cash payment.

The Examination is being held in most of the major cities of the country.

Category 1: Section Officers Grade of the Central Secretariat Service
Category 2: Sections Officers Grade (Integrated Grade II and III) of the General Cadre of the Indian Foreign Service, Branch ‘B’.
Category 3: Section Officers’ Grade of the Railway Board Secretariat Service.
Category 4: Private Secretary Grade of the Central Secretariat Stenographers Service.
Category 5: Grade I of the Stenographers Cadre of the Indian Foreign Service, Branch ‘B’.
Category 6: Grade ‘A’ & ‘B’ merged of the Armed Forces Headquarters Stenographers’ Service
Category 7: Grade ‘B’ of the Railway Board Secretariat Stenographer’s Service.
Category 8: Section Officers Grade of the Intelligence Bureau.
Category 9: Private Secretary Grade in Employees State Insurance Corporation.

Other Information for the Examination

During the filling of the Application form, Candidates should clearly indicate in their Combined Section Officer / Stenographers applications about the category / categories for which they are competing. The Candidates competing for two categories should specify in their Union Public Service Commission S.O / Steno application the two categories in the order of preference.

The candidates will have to fill in their application form online on UPSC Website. Detailed instructions regarding the filling up the online application can be sought on UPSC website. Even, a printed copy of the submitted online application is required to be posted to their Head of Department / Head of Office to the Union Public Service Commission. e – Admit Card of the admitted candidates to UPSC S.O / Steno examination 2014 is uploaded on the UPSC website and no Paper Admit card will be issued by the Union Public Service Commission for the Section Officers or stenographers (Grade B/Grade 1) Departmental Competitive Examination.
